JOURNALING HELPS YOU TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER

JOURNALING HELPS YOU TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER

In the diary you find proof that in situations which today would seem unbearable, you lived, looked around and wrote down observations, that this right hand moved then as it does today, when we may be wiser because we are able to look back upon our former condition, and for that very reason have got to admit the courage of our earlier striving in which we persisted even in sheer ignorance. FRANZ KAFKA As you may already know, many successful people kept a journal or diary. People like Winston Churchill, Thomas Jefferson, and more recently Barack Obama, recorded their thoughts and observations. They recorded their impressions of the people they meet, places they’ve been and the issues that mattered to them.  Journaling is a great way to get to know yourself. Your journal or diary is the only place you can be completely or cruelly honest about your self; your fears and your dreams. It is the ideal place to record your thoughts, accomplishments and the lessons learned from your failures and from life in general. Ten years ago I started a journal. Though I do not write in it daily, I have clung to it in moments of unbearable loss and emotional crisis. It helps me remember changes in my life that hurt like hell, moments that mattered so to me, days that I was just going through the motions of living, etc. On receiving the news of my mother’s death a few years back, I locked myself away for days, with my journal as my only companion. As tears pumped through my eyes for days, I noted my...
THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS OVER, DON’T FORGET TO SAY THANK YOU

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS OVER, DON’T FORGET TO SAY THANK YOU

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. WILLIAM ARTHUR WARD As the holiday season ends, don’t forget to say thank you to all those who made this time precious and memorable. By Thank you, I don’t mean a half-hearted text or email. It is more thoughtful and stylish to handwrite thank you notes to friends and family for gifts received and time-shared over the holiday. And before you start worrying about time to do this, it takes me about two minutes per card and forty-seconds to address the envelope. Our nearest and dearest have spent their hard earned money on gifts, food and entertainment and given us their time to cheer, encourage and to show us that we are loved. A Thank you note shows that you took the time to acknowledge and appreciate their kindness and efforts. This needs to be done now that normal postal service has resumed and by the end of 14 January. A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues. CICERO BE A STORY WORTH...

The healthiest and anti-ageing foods available to us have phytochemicals in them. Phytochemicals mean chemicals derived from the energy of light. They contain intelligent nutrients that are both healing and anti-ageing. Foods that are rich in phytochemicals are highly coloured. THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO SUCCESS

THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO SUCCESS

It takes twenty years to become an overnight success. EDDIE CANTOR We live in a want it now, quick-fix society. Our expectations have been moulded for our needs and desires to be met almost instantly. There is a constant temptation of quick fixes; instant makeovers, diet pills, fillers, botox, fast food, speed dating, etcetera. The modern credo is, Time waits for no man or more accurately, Man waits for nothing. It’s more short-term gain and instant gratification rather than building for long-term success. Many of us move from one quick fix to the next, but no matter how many of these quickies we invest in, the image and the life we desire continue to elude us.  The expectation for a greater life will always be there, but it is not going to be fulfilled by quick fixes. For example, we all know that the only sustainable method for losing weight and keeping it off over the long-term is to eat sensibly and to exercise regularly and sufficiently. Still, many opt for the quick fix route of diet pills. Often, the only weight they loose as a result, is in their wallet. I understand that it is natural to want to achieve results quickly. We want to avoid wasting time. However, my observation is that life is a marathon, not a sprint. What makes us thrive and great requires a long-term focus on what matters most for our wellbeing and a compelling vision. To achieve life lasting benefits, we must first accept that there are no quick fixes. Quick fixes or instant makeovers often focus on our external image. Image building...
STRATEGIES FOR OVERCOMING PROCRASTINATION

STRATEGIES FOR OVERCOMING PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday. NAPOLEON HILL Until you take action, what ever goals you set this year will bear no fruit. Round and round we go when we don’t act, and soon we will stand before a logjam of un-actioned decisions. No matter how much we may dread what we have to do, we really have no choice but to act. For it is only action that will bring the longed for relief. Don’t you dare postpone your decisions. Three Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination Be clear and vocal about the reason/s behind your goals. Use visual reminders to focus your attention on key tasks. Take one small step toward each goal each day. BE A STORY WORTH...
MY BEST SKIN HEALTH AND SKIN CARE TIPS

MY BEST SKIN HEALTH AND SKIN CARE TIPS

What makes people look youthful is the quality of their skin … NIGELLA LAWSON Your skin is a vital and the most looked at organ on your body and should be treated with care. Every twenty years your skin reveals your treatment of it, the environment’s treatment of it and it’s chronological age. It prominently shows any signs of ageing; wrinkles, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone, etc., for every one to see. The good news is that a healthy diet, the right skin care products and lifestyle choices can improve the appearance of your skin. The greater news is that you can actually repair some of the damage that has already been done with a good skin care regime. Please see below my best tips for caring, protecting and rejuvenating your skin, especially your face – the most exposed part of your skin. My best skin health and skin care tips are: Rest: Seven to eight hours sleep a night makes your skin look radiant and better than any skin cream can. Diet: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to hydrate your skin (about six to eight glasses), and to cleanup your system, so that toxins don’t buildup. Fruits, grains and vegetables keep blood moving through your skin. There is a clear connection between healthy skin and good circulation. Stay away from dehydrating elements such as alcohol and smoking: Monitor your alcohol consumption. For healthy skin, you should not drink more than three units per day. A large glass of wine at lunch or dinner is three units. After that, drink water. If you drink, choose red wine. Red wine...
WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE YOUR LIFE NEXT?

WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE YOUR LIFE NEXT?

Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved. WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN                                                       Life boils down to two simple options: to act or to react. To act: To actively create your life by developing your talents into abilities, seeking and finding opportunities that serve your vision and purpose, and building value for yourself and others in the world around you. To react: To drift along with muddled thinking, taking your talents and abilities for granted, constantly reacting to whatever knocks you may experience, and hoping that something may finally fall into place. What I’m trying to say is that our lives will only go where we direct it. Without direction, we fall into the trap of letting life happen to us, with a resulting overwhelming despair and hopelessness. You have the power to choose the life you want. So where are you going to take your life next? BE A STORY WORTH...
MAKE A DECISION TO BE EXTRAORDINARY THIS YEAR

MAKE A DECISION TO BE EXTRAORDINARY THIS YEAR

I have decided to be more than just a “tick tock” kind of clock. When time drags, I can make it fly. To give a second chance, my seconds spin backwards. And imagine, if I made precious moments less momentary. In the end, we have a choice. Do we settle for ordinary, or do we strive to be made of more? GUINNESS MADE OF MORE COMMERCIAL, 2013 I know that many men and women struggle with their self-image. Self-doubt, low self-esteem and limiting beliefs mean that many of us discount our talents, abilities and attractiveness. Many of us do not really think that greatness or extraordinariness is possible in our current world and any dream that may take us outside our familiar routine is swiftly shoved aside. My long observation is that irrespective of our sex, race or heredity, every human being is born seemingly ordinary, except that none of us is really ordinary. We each arrive on this earth standing on the threshold to true human potential. Only a small percentage step forward to achieve it, whilst many step away from it. However, which ever direction we are heading, there is something in our DNA that makes us dream and aspire to becoming extraordinary. We each have a genetic code that is begging to take us from ordinary to extraordinary. What it desperately needs to achieve this is our co-operation. The world is not looking for mediocrity. There are 86,400 seconds in each day. Make a decision now to be extraordinary each second; to be a thought leader in your field; to rid yourself of habits that are not fruitful; and...
LIVE PURPOSEFULLY

LIVE PURPOSEFULLY

You are where you are right now because of the actions you’ve taken or the inaction you’ve taken. STEVE MARABOLI As we begin a new year, the first thing we need to do is to take responsibility for where we are in life at this moment. “Last year was so hard. Last year was impossible”, we cry. “I hope this year brings better things”, we plead. But last year can be chalked up to the actions we’d taken and the inactions we’d taken. And this year will also be chalked up to the actions we will take and the inactions we will take. Many times the real reason behind our actions or inactions are simply because we felt like it, we just didn’t feel like it or we couldn’t help it.  Yes, we may not be responsible for the storms we’ve faced in our lives, but we are responsible for our response to the storms. We are responsible for where we are today.  For it is our ability to choose our actions and our responses that separates us from animals. Unlike animals, We, You and I, are bigger than our problems. We’ve more power than we think we have. As the Television Mogul and Actress, Oprah Winfrey said, “In every tragedy, there is a moment when there is a possibility for triumph.” Whatever you may face this year, be ready to seize your moment. This year, let your actions and inactions be led by your vision for your life, not  by storms or circumstances. Circumstances can’t be blamed for the direction of our lives. It is us who decide our greater future. Live...
LET FREEDOM RAIN

LET FREEDOM RAIN

If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants. SIR ISAAC NEWTON I am clear about who I am. I am clear about being a woman. I am clear about being a black woman. Be clear about who you are. This is your first task as a human being. To all the great men and women on whose shoulders I am able to breathe easier today. To all the great men and women who dreamt about a better world. It is your dreams that made many dreams that once seemed impossible possible today. Let freedom rain. Yesterday, Today, Forever. YOU ARE WHAT YOU DO

YOU ARE WHAT YOU DO

One does what one is; one becomes what one does. ROBERT MUSIL  I believe that we become what we do. Your image is shaped by the small choices you make each day; from the way you manage your time to how you care for your skin and hair. So be mindful of your daily actions, as these actions become your habits or behaviour, and your behaviour becomes who you are. BE A STORY WORTH...
