WHAT’S IN A NAME?

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Hollywood Studio Image Makers understood the importance of a person’s name and the big difference a name can make to an individual’s image. No work on image building is complete without ensuring that the person’s name influences his or her target audience in a positive manner. In Hollywood, plain Norma Jean Baker became Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Scicolone became Sophia Loren, Issur Danielovitch became Kirk Douglas, Archibald Leach became Cary Grant, Maurice Micklewhite became Michael Caine, Betty Joan Perske became Lauren Bacall, etc. The result is that each of these actors considerably increased their perceived value and earning power. The main lesson here is that your name is a vital asset and has an impact on what you are trying to accomplish and how you are perceived. Many of us are influenced by the tittle of a book, a piece of music or a movie. As such, people form a distinct impression when they hear your name. Because your name does affect your image and your image determines your level of acceptance by your target audience, it is vital that you ensure that your name is working for not against you. Key questions to consider are: What does your name say to your public? Does it reflect your character and personal brand? Is it fitting to the image you aspire to? Generally, the best names are those that reflect the personal brand and personality of the person behind it. Such names are also distinctive, memorable, positive and go a long way...
THE POWER OF COLOUR

THE POWER OF COLOUR

As we get older, our hair and skin-tone changes. Wearing the wrong colours can make us appear tired and older than our age, whilst the right colours will instantly enhance the way we look and feel. Wearing the right colours for you will flatter your face and figure, make you appear healthy and radiant and take years off your age. So what are the best colours for you? Let me begin by establishing an important point. We can all wear every colour on the colour spectrum, but not all the shades and clarities of each colour on the spectrum.  For it is the shade and clarity of a colour that determines whether it flatters you. The first principle in dressing your self effectively and attractively is understanding which shades and clarities of each colour in the colour spectrum suits you – which shades and clarities look good against your skin, your hair, your eyes and on your overall colouring. So what do I mean by clarity or shade? Clarity refers to the purity of a colour – How distinctly red, blue or green a colour is. Shade refers to how dark a colour is. A shade is the mixing result of an original colour to which black has been added. So it is simply any colour with black added. Shades of a colour are deeper, richer, more powerful and mysterious. Your Colour Spectrum So we have established that we can all wear every colour on the colour spectrum and that it is the purity and shade of a colour that determines whether it flatters our overall colouring. Your colour spectrum...

PRE-SHOPPING PREPARATION

Buying well means buying once. TIM GUNN. As with any important investment, success is more likely with good preparation. Every successful shopping trip begins with some preparation. Good clothes are expensive. Investing in the wrong items means both time and money wasted. My advice for every shopping trip is to precede with an inventory of your wardrobe. Knowing what is in your wardrobe will help you work out what you need. Try on any garment that you are uncertain about. If a garment doesn’t fit properly or if the colour is unflattering, give it to charity. Pick out all the items that are flattering and tells the story of your personal brand and make a note of any other pieces of clothing that would enhance them; Next, Take a look at current fashion trends in fashion magazines or websites. Don’t be seduced by a trend. Concentrate on elements of the trends that work for your personal style and brand; Next, Make a detailed list of what you need and want to wear in the current or forthcoming season. Be clear of your requirements for each item; colour, style, quality, quantity, etc; Next, Make a note of items that you want to go with something that is already in your wardrobe. MY BEST SKINCARE TIPS

MY BEST SKINCARE TIPS

What makes people look youthful is the quality of their skin … NIGELLA LAWSON. Your skin is a vital and the most looked at organ on your body and should be treated with care. My best skincare tips are: Rest: Seven to eight hours sleep a night makes your skin look radiant and better than any cream can. Diet: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to hydrate your skin [about six to eight glasses], and to cleanup your system, so that toxins don’t build up. Fruits, grains and vegetables keep blood moving through your skin. There is a clear connection between healthy skin and good circulation. Stay away from dehydrating elements such as alcohol and smoking: Monitor your alcohol consumption. For healthy skin, you should not drink more than three units per day. A large glass of wine at lunch or dinner is three units. After that, drink water. If you drink, choose red wine. Red wine is packed with antioxidants that will help keep your skin healthy and protect it against free radicals, but just one glass.  If you are a smoker, get some help to give it up. The long term effects of excessive alcohol consumption and smoking on your skin, liver, kidneys, circulation, eyesight, teeth etc, are absolutely chronic. Exercise regularly: A good workout helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your skin. Commit to an effective skincare routine: Cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin twice daily. The best thing you can do for your skin is to cleanse, tone and moisturise daily with a good set of skincare products that has been chosen to match...
NEW YEAR EVE’S STYLE

NEW YEAR EVE’S STYLE

It’s tempting to go mad on the final and most glamourous night of the year. Let us begin with where you will be spending the evening. Almost everywhere will have plenty of sparkle and glitter. We should never compete with our surroundings; and you can still celebrate the sparkle and glimmer of the evening without wearing the obvious. To stand out, effortlessly, go for an ultra sophisticated, comfortable and sexy look. Your clothes and underwear: Choose your outfit before choosing your underwear. The right underwear should help your clothes fit well and disappear under your clothes. In choosing your clothes, think timeless elegance. Wear something that fits you really well and allows you to eat, drink and dance. Your make-up: Less is always more. Draw attention to your lips with the perfect red lipstick for your skin-tone. The lipstick should not be too metallic or shimmery. To compliment your mouth, keep your eyes and cheeks simple; just a subtle shimmer on the eyes, but no where else. Your nail colour choice should be as close to natural as possible. Make sure your eye brows are groomed, and don’t forget your mascara. Your Hair – Don’t go over board with a dramatic up do, but you need something more stylish than your usual comb or brush-out. What ever look you go for, your hair style should balance out your entire look. Accessories – Finish with one statement accessory – A great necklace or chunky brooch or tiara or cuff. This is your chance to be extravagant! Your Posture – Though it’s cold and windy, stand up straight and walk with...

A bargain ain’t a bargain unless it’s something you need. SIDNEY CARROLL. Post Christmas sales begins today. Before you head off to the shops, remember that most designers’ mistakes end up in the sales. The only time to hit the sales is when something you loved earlier in the season that was outside your budget appears in the sale. Otherwise look at it, admire it, ask yourself: How can I incorporate this item into my wardrobe? Does it flatter my body shape and colouring? Is it appropriate for my personal brand? If your response to any of the above is negative, take a deep breath, start walking and step out of the shop. There is no success in anything without discipline. Maintain a disciplined attitude to sales shopping. Repeat after me, ‘Undisciplined sales shoppers have plenty of scares on their credit cards’. Your image tells your story, M...

Mood is also important. Don’t wear too much jewelry, unless you want to be mistaken for the Christmas tree. Your clothes should be quietly luxurious. Wear colours that are both cosy and calming; winter jewel tones such as deep burgundy, dark blues, chocolate, etc. Don’t forget the texture; velvets, silk and warm weightless fabrics makes you feel comfortable and cuddly. This is a time for touching, kissing and hugs. Anything that looks uncomfortable or too sexy is decidedly not festive. Your image tells your story, M...

Garments continually flow in and out of stores and boutiques. Many of them have been tried on by several customers. Some of these customers take care of their bodies. Some don’t. Some of these customers try the clothes with underwear. Some don’t. The list could get sordid. To avoid experiencing the impression of somebody’s armpit or hips or the make-up of some girl in a hurry, ask for a fresh version that hasn’t been tried by the masses from the stock room.
